Life often feels like a storm. There are moments when everything seems uncertain, when fear creeps in, and when circumstances threaten to overwhelm us. Psalm 107 captures this reality perfectly, describing those who "mount up to the heavens" and then "go down again to the depths," until their soul is melted because of trouble.
These words paint a vivid picture of life's ups and downs. One moment we feel strong, encouraged, and confident. The next moment, we feel discouraged, uncertain, and overwhelmed. But Psalm 107 does not stop there. The very next verses remind us of something powerful—when people cry out to the Lord in their trouble, He delivers them. He calms the storm, quiets the waves, and brings them safely to their desired haven.
This is the heart of the message: God is not surprised by your storm, and He is ready to help when you cry out to Him.
When the Storm Gets Inside of You
Storms are part of life, but there is an important difference between being in a storm and allowing the storm to get inside you. God is not concerned about you simply being in difficult circumstances—He is concerned when those circumstances begin to shape your thoughts, your attitude, and your faith.
When the storm gets inside us, we begin to:
- Doubt God
- Lose hope
- Speak negatively
- Focus on fear instead of faith
Instead of standing strong in the storm, we begin to sink under it. This is exactly what happened to Peter in Matthew chapter 14.
Peter Walking on Water — Then Sinking
In Matthew 14, the disciples found themselves in a storm on the Sea of Galilee. Jesus came walking toward them on the water. When Peter realized it was Jesus, he asked if he could come to Him. Jesus simply said, "Come."
Peter stepped out of the boat and began walking on water. As long as Peter focused on Jesus, he walked above the storm. But when Peter began to look at the wind and waves, fear took over—and he began to sink.
This story teaches an important truth:
Whatever is under Jesus' feet can be under your feet—as long as your eyes remain on Him.
But when we shift our focus from Jesus to the storm, we begin to sink.
Anyone Can Sink
One of the most relatable truths from this message is simple: anyone can sink. It does not matter:
- How long you've been saved
- How close you are to God
- How strong your faith has been
- How recently you experienced a spiritual victory
Peter was within arm's reach of Jesus and still began to sink. Even after witnessing incredible miracles, the disciples still struggled with fear during the storm.
This reminds us that spiritual strength is a daily decision. Every circumstance presents a choice: trust God or focus on the storm.
God Prepares You Before the Storm
Before the storm came, the disciples had just witnessed one of the greatest miracles in Scripture—the feeding of thousands with only a few loaves and fish. Then Jesus sent them into the boat with twelve baskets of leftovers.
This was not by accident. God had already shown them His power before they entered the storm. The miracle was meant to remind them that God would provide and protect them, even in difficult moments.
The same is true today. Often, God prepares us spiritually before storms arrive. He strengthens our faith, reminds us of His promises, and provides encouragement—all so we can stand firm when challenges come.
The Simple Prayer That Changes Everything
When Peter began to sink, he did not pray a long or complicated prayer. He simply cried out:
"Lord, help me."
Immediately, Jesus reached out His hand and lifted him up.
This moment reminds us that God responds quickly when we cry out to Him. We do not need perfect words or elaborate prayers. God simply wants us to call on Him in faith.
Don't Let the Storm Stay in Your Boots
The message also included a powerful illustration: when you step into muddy water, eventually the mud gets into your boots. If you do not clean it out, it slows you down and affects where you walk next.
The same is true spiritually. If we allow bitterness, discouragement, or fear to remain in our hearts, it will eventually shape our attitudes and words. God never intended the storm to cause us to sink. He intended us to walk over it.
God Is Ready to Help You Today
No matter what storm you are facing today:
- You don't have to sink
- You don't have to give in to fear
- You don't have to lose hope
Jesus is still reaching out His hand, just as He did for Peter. All it takes is a simple prayer:
"Lord, help me."
And He will.
