Psalm 23:5 in Context: The Blessings of Being in God's Will
"Thou anointest my head with oil." — Psalm 23:5
This line isn't in verse 1 or 2—it's in verse 5, after we've followed the Shepherd's lead, rested in His pastures, and trusted His path. In other words, the anointing comes as we live under the Shepherd's authority, eating His provision and walking in His will.
The "oil" throughout Scripture pictures the Holy Spirit—not a piece of God, but the Person who indwells every believer at salvation. The question isn't "Do I have the Spirit?" but "How much does the Spirit have of me?"
Sanctification is the Spirit's ongoing work to shape our desires, choices, and habits so we live Spirit-filled, not flesh-driven (Eph. 5:18; Gal. 5:16).
What the Shepherd's Oil Does: Eyes, Ears, and Stamina
Ancient shepherds applied oil to a sheep's head—eyes, ears, and nose—to repel pests, soothe irritation, and prevent infection. Spiritually, the Spirit's anointing guards three vital areas:
1) Eyes — Clear Vision in a Noisy World
Physically: Guard your eyes (Ps. 101:3; Matt. 5:28). Pornography, immodesty, and sensual media pollute the mind and dull spiritual appetite.
Spiritually: The enemy loves to hijack our focus—magnifying wind and waves so we miss Jesus (Matt. 14:30). Spirit-filled vision keeps Christ in view and fear in check.
Prayer: "Lord, anoint my eyes. Help me see what is true, pure, and eternal."
2) Ears — Right Voices, Right Choices
Physically: Don't lend your ears to gossip, slander, or half-truths. Love "thinketh no evil" (1 Cor. 13:5).
Spiritually: Sheep learn the Shepherd's voice (John 10:3–4). The Spirit's anointing helps you discern—to test what you hear and refuse what defiles.
Practice: When something troubling reaches your ears, pray first and pursue the whole truth—graciously.
3) Stamina — Breath to Keep Going
Oil around the nose kept irritants from blocking a sheep's breathing. Spiritually, the Spirit renews our endurance—the holy "oxygen" we need for trials, temptations, and long obedience (Isa. 40:31; James 1:2–4).
Quick to flare up? Quick to quit? That's a stamina issue. Return to verse 1—yield to the Shepherd afresh—and ask for fresh filling.
Prayer: "Lord, fill me again. Strengthen my heart to finish well."
How to Live Under the Anointing (Psalm 23:1–5 in Action)
- Submit daily. "The LORD is my Shepherd" isn't a slogan; it's surrender.
- Feed on His Word. Sit at the table He prepares before you (v. 5).
- Refuse polluted inputs. Guard what you watch, read, and entertain.
- Tune to His voice. Prioritize prayer and silence over social noise.
- Ask and act. The Spirit fills yielded vessels; step forward in obedience today.
Good news: like the prodigal, you can come home quickly. Turn, confess, and the Father restores fully (Luke 15).
